MALANG – The Visual Communication Design (DKV) Program at the Indonesian School of Informatics & Computer (STIKI) Malang has made a significant contribution to the effort to preserve cultural heritage by developing a Visual Information System for the Watu Gong Historical Site. This site is one of the important historical legacies in Malang City, which is currently facing challenges of preservation and sustainability.

The Watu Gong Site, a relic from the Kanjuruhan Kingdom, caught the attention of DKV STIKI Malang. Known for its structure resembling a musical instrument, the Gong, this site holds high historical and cultural value. However, over time, the Watu Gong Site has been forgotten by the community. To address this, Rahmat Kurniawan, M.Pd, affectionately known as Iwan, and Adita Ayu Kusumasari, M.Sn, or Adita, as DKV STIKI Malang lecturers, along with three DKV program students, Adam Cahya Pamungkas, Fasholi Abram, and Salma Ghisani Awalin, decided to take an active role in preserving the historical site.

The project began with in-depth research and observation of the Watu Gong Site, covering aspects of history, architecture, and its impact on the local community. After gaining a profound understanding, the DKV STIKI Malang team created various visual information media, such as infographics, signage systems, and interactive media. This approach aims not only to provide information but also to ensure that the message conveyed is engaging and easily understood by the public.

Iwan stated, “Their work was then presented at the Malang Creative Center, yesterday, at the end of 2023.” This exhibition successfully attracted public attention and sparked increased awareness of the importance of preserving historical sites in Malang City. With the Visual Information System, it is hoped that the Watu Gong Site can be revived in the memory of the community as an inseparable part of local history and culture.

While the project has achieved its goal of raising public awareness, DKV STIKI Malang does not stop there. “We are committed to continuing to develop innovations and similar projects to support the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage in the region. With continuous efforts, it is hoped that other historical sites in Malang will also receive adequate attention and protection,” said Adita.

In addition to making a tangible contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, this project also serves as an example of successful collaboration between lecturers and students. DKV STIKI Malang proves that involving students in such projects can create a positive impact, not only in the academic context but also in supporting cultural preservation and local heritage.

As a final message, DKV STIKI Malang invites the community, especially the younger generation, to participate in safeguarding and preserving local cultural heritage. By understanding and appreciating historical values, it is hoped that the current and future generations can become agents of change contributing to the preservation of cultural wealth in their surroundings.
